Everyone knows about turkey and tryptophan and eating oneself into a coma on the last Thursday of November. Less notorious are those foods containing salicylates which, for folks with asthma or aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease, could lead to the business end of a nebulizer rather than forty winks on the family sofa. Two sources: ATP Science and Salicylate Sensitivity each provides a list of salicylate containing foods by type and content. The good news is, Turkey is not on the list! However, many of those familiar holiday spices like, All spice, Cinnamon, Ginger, Pepper, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme are listed in the high or very high content column depending on which list one is referencing. And of course wine is a definite trigger. These lists are in no way offered as a means of prohibition but only of prescription. Know what you like and eat what you know. Observe the rules of moderation and be sure to take any respiratory medication as prescribed. Managing the symptoms of salicylate sensitivity will ensure that the feast is fully enjoyed and all naps go undisturbed.
