I recently returned from vacation in Ocean City, Md where we enjoyed the beach and the boards. With good weather and ocean temperatures a little cooler than I typically like, I found myself under the umbrella with my toes in the sand much of the time.  I like the beach well enough (for a fair skin fellow of Irish decent), but I usually quip that except for the sun and the sand, the beach is a really great place! But the thing that truly pushes it over the edge for me are those that utilize the beach for their own expansive ash tray. Somehow, I always seem to pitch my umbrella downwind!
So with my toes in the sand and whiff of cigarette smoke on the breeze I learned that despite the warnings and known hazards of cigarette smoking , the FDA has “allowed” two new cigarettes into the market. According to, “The FDA approved Lorillard’s Newport Non-Menthol Gold Box 100s and Newport Non-Menthol Gold Box.” The article relates that this is the first such approval since the agency gained authority to regulate tobacco products just 4 years ago. The FDA spokesperson was quick to add that the same law that gives the FDA legal authority to approve tobacco products “makes clear that companies cannot say their products are FDA approved.” Huh? Seems my toes aren’t the only thing in the sand.
