The number one goal of our new AARC President is to:
“Evaluate the transitional needs to meet the competencies necessary to develop the
‘Respiratory Therapist for 2015 and Beyond,’ based on the expected needs of
respiratory care patients, the profession and the evolving health care system.”
As I read it, George Gaebler’s goal outlines three essential needs:
- Transitional needs – How do we get there from here?
- Competency needs – What knowledge, skills and attitudes are required?
- Expected needs – What does “there” look like?
The required competencies have already been defined and many of the expected healthcare needs of the general population have been identified. The question of ‘How do we get there from here?’ remains.
In my blog from Aug. 14, 2012, Get On Board I remarked; “Integrating the proposed (2015 and Beyond) competencies at all levels of preparatory and ongoing training is essential if we are to meet the challenge of maintaining a sufficient number of respiratory care professionals with the high-level skill set demanded by these recommendations.”
This is one of my recommendations for how we get there. What are yours? How do we take our profession to the next level? Please post your recommendations to my blog. I look forward to hearing from you!
