OK, this one’s for the birds, literally. Apparently two entirely different live strain vaccines used to prevent respiratory disease in poultry have recombined to form a monster virus! So far, the virulent vixen is only chicken lethal, eliminating up to seventeen percent of the chickens in two primary poultry raising Australian states. You can read the complete article here.

All joking aside, this kind of story can make you shudder. I’m not an alarmist by nature. I’m not trying to paint scenes of the looming apocalypse. I am only emphasizing the need for care and oversight. It was not too many years ago that SARS and the bird flu were big news. Then it was H1N1, the swine flu.

In this instance we have two live strain vaccines being administered to separate, but apparently intermingling, chicken populations. I’m just saying we could be more careful, right?! Biology 101: Viruses mutate! And they mostly mutate with each other! In the final analysis, it’s the lack of thoughtful care on the part of those responsible that really leaves me in stunned disbelief. Luckily, for now, this mutant is only affecting the kind of animals that go on the barbie.
