Strategic Staffing Part Three

Make sure to read part 1 and part 2.

According to the AARC the blue ribbon approach to staffing involves the following key ingredients:

  • Inclusion of all patient centric clinical and support activities that respiratory therapists perform;
  • Inclusion of mandatory therapist centric activities such as labor law mandated paid breaks, shift report, participation in required training, or the need to safety test equipment etc.;
  • Statistically valid activity time standards for all the services provided by a department; and
  • The ability to flex direct patient care staff based upon service needs in which staff can be added or reduced to match demand.

Herein lies the recipe for success! Added in the right quantities and prepared with thought and care when mixed in the extremely dynamic crucible of the modern healthcare setting,  these ingredients will yield consistent, reliable, strategic staffing patterns. Patterns that will bear fruit in labor budget management as well provide a foundation from which accurate and actionable benchmarking can be realized.

Harry Reasoner once said of the great American past time, “Statistics are to baseball what a flaky crust is to Mom’s apple pie.” And as anyone will tell you, it is the crust that really makes the pie. More on that next time.
