The Novel Corona Virus akin to SARS now has a name: “Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus or (MERS-CoV)”, an article reports. MERS, like its cousin SARS causes cold-like symptoms that quickly escalate to severe and even fatal respiratory infections. Though the search for effective treatment continues with great urgency, The World Health Organization remains disconcerted:

‘“We know that when people get infected, many of them develop severe pneumonia. What we don’t know is how often people might develop mild disease. We also know that most of the persons who have been infected so far have been older men, often with other medical conditions. We are not sure why we are seeing this pattern and if it will change over time.”’

The Coronavirus Study Group, which named the virus assures that “This name is endorsed by the discoverers of the virus and other researchers that pioneered MERS-CoV studies, by the World Health Organization and by the Saudi Ministry of Health.” Of course with a mortality rate of 50 to 60 percent, a potentially pandemic doomsday coronavirus by any other name is just as troubling.
