Texas Health and Human Services Commission Adopts Mediware ClosedLoop Medication Management Strategy

Texas Health and Human Services Commission Adopts Mediware’s ClosedLoop™ Medication Management Strategy State licenses MediMAR for 11 Behavioral Health facilities.

LENEXA, KS, Oct. 26, 2007 – Increasing its market presence in behavioral health medication management, Mediware Information Systems, Inc., (NASDAQ: MEDW) announced today that the Texas Department of State Health Services has signed an agreement to license additional components of Mediware’s ClosedLoopTM Medication Management suite.  The agency, which currently utilizes Mediware’s WORx pharmacy management software for 21 facilities throughout the state, plans to implement Mediware’s Electronic Medication Administration Record (MediMARTM) in 11 of these to further enhance patient-safety capabilities.

“Mediware’s closed-loop approach offers unique advantages for behavioral health providers,” said John Damgaard, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Mediware.  “Behavioral health patients are mobile and present challenges when administering medications. Using MediMAR’s positive patient identification tools and comprehensive administration procedures, Texas behavioral health clinicians can ensure the right drugs are provided to the right patients, in the right dosage and route.”

The Texas Department of State Health Services sought an automated medication administration record system to reduce the potential for medication errors and streamline documentation efforts upon administration. By selecting MediMAR, which is fully integrated with their existing pharmacy management system, Texas can extend medication safety controls to the point of administration and maintain a single medication record for each patient.

“We are deeply gratified by the confidence Texas Health Services has bestowed on Mediware through this selection,” said Damgaard. “Expanding our longstanding relationship to include this additional functionality will help enhance patient safety and streamline care,” said Damgaard.

Damgaard added that Mediware’s seamless, closed-loop approach links the core components of the medication-use process.  “From prescribing to dispensing, to administration and documentation, every care provider in Texas behavioral health facilities will be connected to a single source of information that gives real-time medication tracking and notification of the patient’s status,” he said.  “The result is safety, accuracy and efficiency that can exceed the capabilities of systems that try to integrate patchwork disparate medication management systems.”

According to published studies, one in five medication doses administered in hospitals are given erroneously.  To significantly reduce error potential, Mediware’s ‘Closed-Loop’ suite delivers an integrated data management solution that connects doctors, nurses and pharmacists with real-time information and documentation capabilities.

“In addition to centralizing the entire medicine management process in one database, another significant benefit of the closed-loop approach is complete elimination of manual and redundant processes,” said Damgaard.  “Poor handwriting and duplicate data entry pose too many risks when considering patient safety.”

Mediware’s approach has been well adopted in behavioral health facilities which often have a more distributed environment where the pharmacy and units are in separate facilities. Mediware’s suite provides single point of information that facilitates better communication among care providers resulting in fewer errors.
