Southeast Alaska Regional Health System Selects Mediware’s WORx Phamacy System for 8 Facilities

Health system will leverage powerful centralized pharmacy controls to improve medication safety across distributed network of facilities.

LENEXA KS, June 30, 2008Mediware Information Systems, a provider of ClosedLoop™ clinical systems for blood and medication management, announced today that the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) has purchased Mediware’s WORx® pharmacy software system to manage medication therapies for the organization’s 8 facilities.

Over the past year SEARHC has been investing heavily to replace the clinical and administrative technologies used in their facilities, seeking out best of breed solutions capable of meeting their unique requirements. In addition to implementing the new Mediware pharmacy system, SEARHC staff is in the process of replacing systems for 9 core functions, including admissions, billing, lab, radiology, and financials.

“With our distributed population and wide geographic coverage, key requirements for all our systems include the ability to remotely access and maintain information in a central location,” said Peter Apathy, SST Project Manager, who is leading all SEARHC’s system implementation projects. “As we began our search for a new pharmacy system, we sought out best of breed vendors with solutions designed to integrate with the other systems we are implementing. In Mediware, we found a system that lived up to what we were asking it to do, and a company that was organized and professional to work with.”

A critical determination in the selection of Mediware’s WORx software, which is used by nearly 200 hospitals throughout North America, is the product’s ability to effectively manage inpatient and outpatient care from a central system. Other key requirements that affected the decision include the robust clinical and safety checks offered by the Mediware system, and the flexibility Mediware offers in integrating with systems from other vendors.

SEARHC is deeply committed to providing the highest quality care and is focused on operational excellence in every part of the organization. In addition to maintaining Joint Commission accreditation for its two main facilities, SEARHC was one of the first health care organizations in Alaska to adopt Total Quality Management principles.

“At SEARHC, we have unique and comprehensive needs that are not found in other areas of the country,” said Mr. Apathy. “But we also have an exceptionally high commitment to quality care and patient safety. We only sought out best of breed technology solutions able to meet our detailed specifications. We are pleased with the results of the selection process and feel that Mediware’s pharmacy software best suits our situation.”

“In some of SEARHC’s locations, physicians and pharmacists are not always available,” said John Damgaard, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Mediware. “Through a unique configuration that includes software driven safety checks and video conferencing, care providers can consult with clinicians in other facilities to ensure the diagnosis and prescribed therapies are accurate and appropriate for each patient. Their adaptation of available technologies really supports their strong sense of community.”

Information on Mediware’s ClosedLoop approach to medication management is available on Mediware’s website. Executive reports can also be downloaded from the Resources section.

SEARHC is a non-profit tribal health consortium supporting 18 Native communities in southeast Alaska. The organization was established in 1975 and is one of the oldest and largest Native-run health organizations in the United States. SEARHC includes a core hospital and a large outpatient clinic operation that provide general care for the Native populations in Juneau and Sitka. These facilities are supported by local medical centers, physician practices, and community health offices in smaller towns throughout Southeast Alaska to provide acute (medical) care, dental, mental health, physical and respiratory therapies, substance abuse treatment and traditional native healing services.
