Mediware’s Transfusion Management Software Adopted by Four Additional Tenet Hospitals

LENEXA, KS., Oct. 22, 2007Mediware Information Systems announced today that four additional hospitals in the Tenet Healthcare system have licensed Mediware’s HCLLTM Transfusion Management software system, which provides automated support for highly regulated blood processes to reduce transfusion errors, improve patient safety and maximize operational efficiency.

Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE: THC) is based in Dallas, Texas, and through its subsidiaries, owns and operates 66 acute care hospitals in 12 states.  Several have earned national quality awards.  To date, nine Tenet hospitals have entered into agreements with Mediware.  The four newest HCLL adopters are:  Frye Regional Medical Center, Hickory, NC; Spalding Regional Medical Center, Griffin, Ga. and Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center and Houston Northwest Medical Center in Houston Tex.

According to John Damgaard, chief operating officer of Mediware, more than 300 top-tier healthcare institutions have licensed HCLL since the product was commercially released.  From donor to recipient, HCLL is designed to manage blood products administered at hospitals and centralized transfusion service facilities.  It is a powerful software tool for reducing transfusion errors, enhancing patient safety, managing the hospital’s blood supply and maximizing the efficiency and productivity of the entire transfusion process.

“With more and more products in blood-bank inventories, there is a critical need for clear, clinically relevant and reportable information communicated in a closed loop,” said Damgaard. “Blood products are highly regulated products but detailed data isn’t available in all environments. Major health systems like Tenet rely on HCLL to capture, manage and track this information so transfusions are safe and efficient.”

Damgaard added that HCLL’s strong market acceptance is based on its rich functionality, enterprise-level features and utilities, and advanced integration capabilities.  “HCLL gives multi-facility health systems like Tenet Healthcare the ability to manage blood services processes from its central location,” said Damgaard.

For Cypress and Spalding, HCLL solved the need to automate the manual and potentially error-prone process of making bar-coded labels for blood products, now mandated by guidelines from the International Society for Blood Transfusion, known as ISBT 128.  HCLL combines label production and product verification in one step.

Frye and Houston Northwest are users of Mediware’s legacy Lifeline product and are upgrading to HCLL.

Mediware is demonstrating the effectiveness of the HCLL suite at the American Association of Blood Banks meeting in Anaheim, CA, This includes the company’s newest offering, BloodSafe, which enables hospital blood banks to securely store blood products in high need hospital wards.
