Department of Defense Implements Mediware’s® HCLL™ Transfusion in 60 Facilities

LENEXA, Kan., September 22, 2015 – HCLL Transfusion, an industry-leading blood transfusion management application from Mediware Information Systems, is now live in all of the 60 Military Treatment Facilities (MTF) for which the Department of Defense (DoD) has contracted. The addition of HCLL software to the Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) is helping ensure that the blood products supplied to America’s servicemen and women will remain safe and reliable, both within the United States and in MTFs around the world.

The HCLL application, known in DoD installations as the Blood Management Blood Bank Transfusion Service (BMBB/TS), automates the processes for blood test results and transfusions, making HCLL software another sophisticated tool utilized within the military’s healthcare systems. The Military Health System contracted to use the software directly with ThunderCat Technology, which delivers technology services and solutions to the federal government. Planned Systems International (PSI) managed the implementation.

About the Armed Services Blood Program

The Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) is the official blood collection, manufacturing and transfusion program for the U.S. military. As a tri-service organization, the ASBP represents all three services—Army, Navy and Air Force—and is tasked with the collection, processing, storage and distribution of blood and blood products to ill or injured service members, veterans and their families worldwide. The program manages blood requests from the five major combatant commands by directing available blood supplies when and where needed.

Susann Nienhaus is a Registered Nurse and attorney. After obtaining her
Bachelor of Science in Nursing, cum laude, in 1979, she
spent nearly 20 years focused on cardiovascular surgical nursing. In 1990, she
was among the first class to achieve Certification as a Registered Nurse First
Assistant from the Association of Operating Room Nurses. In 1999, Mrs. Nienhaus
graduated from the IU School of Law at Indianapolis where she was an editor on
the International and Comparative Law Review and received the Jordan
Constitutional Law Award. As Director of Risk Management at St. Vincent
Indianapolis Hospital from 2002 through 2007, Mrs. Nienhaus developed and
implemented a patient safety program that combined quality improvement
initiatives and risk reduction strategies to improve departmental efficiencies
and prevent healthcare errors.

Transfusion Safety Nurse Consultant

Carolyn Clancy is licensed registered nurse with her master’s in nursing
as an adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist. Carolyn began her nursing
career as a perioperative nurse and became an expert in her field progressing
on to serve as a staff development coordinator and CNS for a level-one trauma
hospital. She is an expert in malignant hyperthermia, transfusion safety, and
endoscope reprocessing. Carolyn’s contributions to nursing are evidenced in her
service as member and chair of nursing research committees, nurse practice
councils, team effectiveness committees, and journal clubs, and was elected to
serve as ambassador for magnet designations on several accounts. With her
advanced training and years of perioperative and trauma experience she is
ideally suited to influence care outcomes by providing expert consultation for
nursing staffs and by implementing improvements in health care delivery

Physician Advisor, Transfusion Services

Carolyn Burns, MD is a Board Certified Pathologist (AP/CP) and served as
Medical Director of the Jewish Hospital Healthcare System, Department of
Pathology (Louisville, KY.) from 1991 to 2011. This included medical
directorship of the Transfusion and Tissue Services for this 5- hospital
system. Additionally, she is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department
of Pathology at the University of Louisville and until recently, had been the
Medical Advisor for the Clinical Laboratory Science Program.

After earning her Microbiology degree with Honors from the University of
Kansas in 1981, and her Medical Degree Cum Laude from the University of
Missouri in 1986, Dr. Burns completed a surgical internship and subsequent
pathology residency at the University of Louisville in Kentucky in 1991. During
residency she received the John P. Miles Award for Outstanding General Surgery
Resident in Neurosurgery and served as Chief Resident in Pathology.

Sarah DaccarettSarah Daccarett, MD, FCAP

Physician Advisor, Clinical Laboratory Utilization Services

Sarah Daccarett, MD, FCAP is board certified in clinical pathology. She
currently advises on effective laboratory test utilization so that physicians
can provide healthcare that is high in quality, reliable and low in cost. She
was raised in the mountain west and completed both her engineering and medical
doctorate degrees at the University of Utah. She then completed training in Pathology
at the University of Utah and ARUP National Laboratories in Salt Lake City,
Utah.  Sarah brings a wealth of
experience and knowledge in analyzing and standardizing physician ordering
patterns, as well as in the development and implementation of evidence-based
decision support tools that deliver value.

Jay MenitoveJay Menitove, MD

Physician Advisor, Transfusion Services

Dr. Jay Menitove’s blood banking/transfusion medicine career spans 36
years. Dr. Menitove extended his internal medicine/hematology background to
focus on mitigation of transfusion-transmitted disease risks and appropriate
utilization of blood and blood components (now considered patient blood
management). For almost 17 years, Dr. Menitove headed the Community Blood
Center of Greater Kansas City (CBC-KC), an organization providing outstanding
service to 70 hospitals in 70 counties spanning mid-Missouri to eastern Kansas.
In addition to management responsibilities, he guided the implementation of
innovative programs such as being the first regional blood center to introduce
ISBT 128 symbology and the first to establish a region-wide Antibody Registry.
He is an author or co-author of more than 150 peer-reviewed articles,
editorials, book chapters, etc.

Dr. Menitove is committed to transfusion medicine activities including
Chairing the HHS Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety and
Availability, Chairing an Alliance for Blood Operators committee addressing
Risk-based Decision Making, and serving as an Associate Editor of Transfusion.
He believes Transfusion Medicine is an exciting and important discipline that
continuously seeks improvements in patient outcomes and donor care.

Alex RyderAlex Ryder, M.D., Ph.D.

Independent Physician Advisor for Mediware Consulting & Analytics

Alex Ryder, M.D., Ph.D., is board certified in clinical pathology and
transfusion medicine/blood banking. He currently serves as Director of
Transfusion Services at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and Assistant
Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology at University of Tennessee Health Science Center in
Memphis. A fully licensed physician/surgeon in the state of Tennessee, Dr. Ryder
completed his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of medicine and his
residency and fellowship programs at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. He has
recently completed his Ph.D. in Investigative Medicine at Yale Graduate School. Dr Ryder is
a strong advocate of patient blood management who enjoys advising and lecturing on
effective transfusion practices as well as being an adhoc reviewer of Transfusion. He also
authored or co-authored several articles and book chapters and presented at numerous
medical society meetings and symposia.
