Age didn’t keep eight teams of women in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and even 80s from competing in a double elimination tournament in the 7th Annual Granny Basketball Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa this weekend. The tournament is part of the 25th Annual Iowa Senior Olympics.

The ladies wear vintage 1920s uniforms and follow a set of rules that mimic those that women once followed in the 1900s. The women play six-on-six, with each court divided into three sections. Each player must remain in their assigned court. There is no running or jumping. These vintage rules help prevent injuries and keep the game challenging for the players.

The ladies play Granny Basketball because it’s a great way to exercise, meet new friends, and have fun. But even more, Granny Basketball players play to raise money for selected charities and non-profit organizations.
