Honoring Veterans through Independence
Harmony is honoring all those who have served – now and in the past—this week in recognition of Veterans Day. To all our nation’s veterans, thank you for service and sacrifice!
As our nation celebrates veterans this week, we want to highlight the Veteran Directed Home and Community Based Services (VD-HCBS) Program that helps keep veterans at risk of nursing home placement in their homes and communities. While VD-HCBS may not be as fun as some of the other veteran-specific services highlighted this week (like a complimentary 1-hour massage from Massage Envy), the program couldn’t be more important, considering it helps keep veterans healthy and independent.
The program was developed as a collaboration between Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and the U.S. Administration on Community Living (ACL) in April of 2012 to provide veterans the opportunity to self-direct their long-term supports and services that enable them to continue to live independently at home. Veterans enrolled in VD-HCBS manage their own budgets, pick the right mix of goods and services to meet their needs, and hire their own personal care aides. This consumer-directed model empower veterans to take control of their long-term care.
