OptiMed Eliminates Manual Processes with CPR+ Automation
See how one specialty pharmacy has access to complete patient tracking with CPR+
OptiMed Pharmacy, located in Kalamazoo, Mich., used to manage its operations with a system designed for retail pharmacies, which also required stacks of physical file folders and other manual processes.
However, says founder and CEO Andrew Reeves, R.Ph., “We eventually realized that our paper system was not sustainable.” That’s when OptiMed’s team of pharmacists suggested CPR+, an application they had learned about at a pharmacy trade show. “We talked with others in the industry, and the name kept coming up; CPR+ was the best one out there,” says Reeves.
As a result of the switch to Mediware’s CPR+ Enterprise System, OptiMed Pharmacy has been able to:
- Reliably monitor patient care
- Consistently optimize productivity
- Expand business with new contracts and services
Complete patient tracking and order fulfillment
In less than five years, OptiMed Pharmacy expanded from a small, clinic-based specialty medication provider to a full-service specialty pharmacy that now treats approximately 450 patients each month with chronic diseases that generally fall into four states: hepatitis C, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), dermatology, and rheumatology.
In addition, a second facility handles HIV treatments. CPR+ has made all the minute details manageable and has also automated what used to be manual functions, including monitoring refills, tracking medications, and processing claims. “We had a refill queue with our old system, but it wasn’t automatic, and it didn’t have the safety net we needed. But CPR+ just automatically puts patients in the queue, and they can’t fall out of it,” explains Reeves.
Eye-opening time savings
After just a few months of using CPR+, OptiMed’s cumbersome paper system and its stacks of file folders were gone, and Reeves and the staff didn’t feel as busy as they had been. “We wondered if business had slowed or if we were really working more efficiently,” he shares. As it turned out, “That was the best month we had ever had. The efficiencies and productivity in the workflow process have been huge,” he adds.
Access to new contracts
Even before all the efficiencies were fully realized, a drug manufacturer contacted Reeves and offered OptiMed a service agreement to provide certain reporting. “We would never have been able to take that contract with our previous system,” he assures.
Data and the ability to analyze it, according to Reeves, is what drives the business’ forward progress. With the reporting capabilities of the CPR+ Analytics Module, he and his team are able to demonstrate their company’s value. As a result, OptiMed continues to grow. “We have doubled each year for the last two years and are on track to double again this year,” confides Reeves. Soon, the company will be able to increase its treatments and further expand the care that it provides.
