According to data from Option Care, a leading provider of home infusion services with locations across the U.S., patients with advanced heart failure can enjoy a better quality of life as a result of home infusion of inotropic therapy. The research was presented at the 2017 National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) Annual Conference & Exposition.

Although several studies have demonstrated the benefits of inotropic therapy in inpatient settings, limited data was available to confirm that the therapy was also effective in home settings. “Our study shows home inotropic therapy improved quality of life in advanced heart failure patients,” said Kyle Walther, PharmD, lead author of the study and Option Care pharmacy resident. “Because inotropic therapy typically is provided long-term, it’s invaluable that patients have the opportunity to receive this vital care in the comfort of their own homes, so they can continue to spend time with their families and enjoy the best quality of life.”
Option Care’s research included 88 patients, all of whom filled out the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) before the start of treatment and three months after therapy. By comparing MLHFQ results, researchers found that, among all patients, there was an 8.65% improvement in scores. The scores also indicated that the inotropic therapy was especially effective at reducing shortness of breath, hospital stays, and medical care costs.
