|
CHALLENGE
In 2009, Shands Hospital at the University of Florida (Shands UF) underwent a major expansion that relocated its blood bank to a new 500,000-square-foot facility a fair distance from over half of its high-volume departments. At the same time, the health system closed a nearby facility, which meant a dramatic increase in volume for the blood bank.
SOLUTION
Using Mediware’s BloodSafe® remote storage solution with intelligent integration to HCLL™ Transfusion, Shands UF minimized the impact of the blood bank’s relocation as well as realized some impressive gains in productivity and service levels. The combination of HCLL and BloodSafe gave the blood management team the essential remote capability they needed during a challenging relocation. Plus, it allowed them to efficiently manage their blood budget without losing focus on safety or adding staff.
RESULTS
- Reduced turnaround time for delivery of electronically crossmatched blood from 15 minutes to 8 minutes.
- Decreased turnaround time for product setup from 10 minutes to less than 3 minutes.
- Improved productivity by 10.7%.
- Accommodated increased workload by almost tripling the number of products issued via the BloodSafe.
- Reduced blood budget, even though blood price increased.
- Achieved a C/T ratio of 1.27 for units issued by the BloodSafe.
