Blood Centers Adopt Mediware® Software to Analyze Blood Management Effectiveness
Software actively monitors blood management performance to help hospitals and blood centers to improve areas such as transfusion appropriateness, blood utilization and inventory management to lower costs and increase safety.
LENEXA, KS July 11, 2011 – Mediware Information Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: MEDW) announced that use of the InSight Performance Management™ platform for blood management continues to accelerate in both hospital blood banks and independent blood centers. This includes recent contracts with BloodCenter of Wisconsin, Community Blood Center of Kansas City and the U.S. Department of Defense. These customers have joined with Mediware hospital based customers to leverage the InSight software to track performance and drive efficiencies to help reduce blood costs and improve transfusion safety.
Use of the InSight software in prestigious blood centers has expanded the software’s innovative management tools beyond hospitals. Organizations such as BloodCenter of Wisconsin and Kansas City based Community Blood Center are planning to offer InSight software dashboards to their hospital customers as a value-added service, enabling their hospital customers to proactively monitor current performance in transfusion services, identify key trends and be advised when targets are not being met. These blood centers are also planning to leverage the InSight software to monitor internal performance to help ensure that efficiency, inventory and revenue targets are being met.
“BloodCenter of Wisconsin is partnering with some of its hospitals to reshape the transfusion medicine model to promote patient safety, increase transparency and reduce cost and waste,” said Rodeina Davis, CIO at BloodCenter of Wisconsin. “This will be accomplished through the use of medical best practices and information technology throughout the supply chain. Mediware’s InSight tool is one of the components that will allow BloodCenter and its hospitals to localize key metrics reporting to improve blood management and utilization.”
The InSight software is a uniquely powerful solution. It provides both strong analytics capabilities as well as hundreds of easy to use indicators including ‘Flash Alerts’ based on near real-time performance data.
Jay Menitove, President/CEO and Medical Director of Kansas City based Community Blood Center said, “InSight provides an extremely powerful tool for assisting clinicians, transfusion service directors, and their blood center colleagues develop best-practice patient blood management programs.”
The InSight software distinguishes itself against other analysis tools by being able to access and aggregate data from any source system to enable greater control and flexibility. For blood management customers the InSight software can combine data from lab and transfusion systems, patient electronic medical records and even the hospital employee systems to present comprehensive dashboards to better manage current performance levels.
For example, using InSight’s automated Transfusion Appropriateness indicators hospitals can effectively audit 100 percent of transfusions based on the facility’s specific transfusion guidelines. One hospital network reported that the software successfully audited the 500 transfusions performed during the month to identify the 60 cases that required additional review. This provides hospitals the security of a 100% audit without the need for a technician to review each case.
Mediware will be demonstrating InSight’s blood management capabilities during two upcoming events including the AABB CTTxpo, in San Diego, CA, October 22-25 and the Mediware Customer Conference on October 26th. Mediware is also hosting a webcast featuring the results experienced by the UC Health blood bank on November 10. Registration is required for this online event.
