Mediware Announces Agreement to Acquire
Chemotherapy Management Software

Acquisition expands company’s role in effectively managing patient-specific cancer treatments in key markets worldwide.

LENEXA, KS March 15, 2012 – Mediware Information Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: MEDW) today announced that it has signed an agreement with Cobbler ICT Services BV to acquire the assets associated with the Cyto Management System (CMS), a comprehensive chemotherapy management software solution currently deployed in Holland and Belgium. The CMS software was designed specifically to track patients, manage highly individualized medication-based treatment plans, help control costs, and report outcomes associated with cancer therapies performed in hospitals and oncology centers. The software utilizes a multilingual language platform that makes the product easy to configure for new international markets.  The transaction is expected to cost Mediware €1.7 million ($2.2 million USD) and close in mid-April.

Mediware will continue marketing the software through existing European distribution agreements under Mediware’s international brand and open a regional office in Holland to manage European sales and services.  The software will also be made available immediately to the UK and Irish markets to capitalize on the dominant position of the company’s UK-based JAC medication management product suite, which is used by more than 50 percent of UK hospitals. Additional geographic expansion will occur as opportunities arise.

Commenting on the pending acquisition, Mediware’s president and chief executive officer, Thomas Mann said: “Oncology is one of the fastest growing areas of healthcare. There are more than 11 million new cancer cases reported every year, a number that could increase to 16 million by 2020. As a result, there have been huge investments in new treatment technologies and pharmaceuticals. Cancer drugs alone have seen a four-fold increase in sales over 10 years to more than $19 billion in 2008. Yet, despite this intense global investment, care providers are still underserved by software solutions that do not effectively manage the data, process and reporting requirements of these complex personalized treatment plans.

“With the cost of care increasing dramatically, we believe there is a critical need for a system that provides precise therapy management for the patient, while also monitoring and reporting those treatments, their outcomes and costs. The acquisition of the CMS software and intellectual property is strategic, provides a good value for Mediware and launches us in a new area of care. With our experience in medication management, FDA regulations and complex information management, I believe Mediware has the experience to become a leader in this pivotal and rapidly growing area of healthcare technology.”

Seen as an area of revenue growth that is both rapid and long term, Mediware has been evaluating oncology treatment management solutions in the US and Europe for more than 18 months. Based on this market analysis, the CMS software solution provided the company the functionality and technology platform to quickly expand in multiple geographic markets.

“Driving the high growth potential of this global market is the recognition that highly personalized cancer care is increasingly important to patient survival rates,” continued Mr. Mann. “But to be optimally effective these precision treatment regimens require robust and highly specialized information systems capable of coordinating therapies and tracking outcomes while managing costs.

“The CMS software is well positioned to support these goals. It has rich clinical features and powerful integration capabilities that enable its use with our existing products as well as the hospital’s core electronic health record. It also has a robust multi-lingual platform that provides the solution with multi-national appeal. This should make it an efficient contributor to our continued international growth.”

The CMS acquisition provides Mediware the opportunity to immediately enhance its solution offerings in JAC’s current markets and broaden the company’s global structure. With the addition of CMS, JAC enhances its position as the leading medication management technology vendor in the UK with proven software solutions for pharmacy management, e-prescribing, medication administration and chemotherapy management.

“Customers in the UK and Ireland are looking increasingly for e-prescribing and medication management suppliers to offer a broader more complete solution. The addition of CMS to our UK portfolio positions JAC uniquely in the market place to deliver a comprehensive medication management solution,” said Robert Tysall- Blay, managing director of Mediware’s international operations and chief executive of JAC Computer Services Ltd, in the UK.

Mediware will be demonstrating the CMS solution for European prospects during the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) conference and exposition, which will be held in Milan March 21-23.

OrderTrak Electronic Ordering Software Delivers Dramatic Results for Blood Centers and Their Customers

Benefits include improved efficiency, fewer errors and higher customer satisfaction.

LENEXA, KS February 14, 2012 –Mediware Information Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: MEDW) announced today that blood centers leveraging the company’s OrderTrak™ software are reporting dramatic efficiency gains, including streamlined workflow, improved order management and higher staff productivity. OrderTrak is an order management software system that allows blood centers to offer online blood ordering and tracking capabilities to hospital customers. Other reported benefits achieved through use of the software include a dramatic reduction in order errors and improved hospital loyalty due to the system’s anywhere access, ease of use and rich analytics. Mediware is hosting informational webcasts on February 16 and February 28 to discuss specific results achieved.

“Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center was one of the first pioneering blood centers to adopt OrderTrak and provide hospitals a comprehensive electronic platform to place, manage and track blood product orders,” said Marc Lewis, director of product management at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. In 2011 the Houston-based blood center drove more than a million miles to deliver more than 650,000 units to customers across Texas. They collect more than 333,000 units annually. “OrderTrak has been a great solution for our blood center and an asset that our hospital customers value.”

OrderTrak provides blood centers an online order management platform as an alternative to receiving phone and fax-based orders from hospitals. Using the system, blood center staff can more effectively view standing orders, triage new orders and prioritize delivery schedules to best manage their inventory. As the percentage of electronic orders increase, blood centers can realize additional benefits, including higher staff productivity.

“Before OrderTrak, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., we would average almost 300 calls from customers requesting services or status updates,” said Mr. Lewis. “While the calls are important, they interrupt staff workflow and impact our overall productivity. Because so many of our customers are now leveraging the system, we now get fewer than 100 calls during regular hours. It’s been a tremendous productivity improvement for us.”

Hospitals utilizing the system can securely input recurring, standard and STAT orders and track order status online at any time of day. Replacing phone and fax-based orders with online orders further benefits blood centers by eliminating order errors resulting from miscommunication, misinterpretation or illegible forms.

Additionally, OrderTrak provides tools that allow hospitals to analyze order histories, usage patterns and key efficiency metrics such as order-to-delivery times. Other features, such as the ‘Online Memo’, improve communication between the blood center and hospitals, which may be used to call for specialty blood products or to broadcast announcements that affect the entire network of hospitals.

Mediware has scheduled informational webcasts on February 16 and February 28 to discuss results achieved using OrderTrak and how the product can be leveraged to improve efficiencies and increase loyalty with hospital customers. Information on the webcasts can be found on Mediware’s website, www.mediware.com, or on the company’s online event center.

Mediware Acquires Transtem to Expand with Cellular Therapy Software

Acquisition addresses a new and rapidly growing area of healthcare with technology and clinical expertise to manage adult stem cells and cord blood in the treatment of cancer.

LENEXA, KS January 4, 2012 –Mediware Information Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: MEDW) today announced that it has acquired substantially all the assets of St. Louis-based Transtem, LLC, a provider of software that manages the collection and transplantation of adult stem cells in cellular-based therapies and medical research. The acquisition continues the expansion of Mediware’s blood management expertise and extends the company with software and domain expertise in a rapidly growing field that includes cancer treatment and regenerative medicine. Details related to the acquisition were not released.

Commenting on the acquisition, Mediware’s president and chief executive officer, Thomas Mann said: “The use of adult stem cells is a rapidly growing area of healthcare that is showing tremendous potential. In 2009 more than 60,000 adult stem cell transplantations were performed globally in the treatment of cancer and certain blood diseases. Additionally, the field of regenerative medicine in the U.S. and abroad is rapidly accelerating with more than 3,600 stem cell clinical trials now in progress.

“This is cutting-edge healthcare that is pursuing cures for such large patient population diseases as myocardial infarction (MI), critical limb ischemia (CLI), Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, cancer and many others.  Importantly, there is a growing demand for a comprehensive software solution to effectively manage the collection and preparation of the therapeutic cell solutions as well as streamline donor, patient and treatment data management.”

Transtem was founded by cellular therapy professionals to address day to day needs that were not being met with other technology solutions. Their work evolved into an innovative stem cell management software solution that provides a total patient and program management focus. This includes collection, processing, transplantation, and post-transplant monitoring and reporting of patient outcomes.

“Managing the collection, processing and therapeutic use of multiple fractions of adult stem cells is a highly complex process, but it is also a natural extension of Mediware’s core blood management focus where we have deep clinical and regulatory expertise,” continued Mr. Mann. “It’s also an area where our existing customers in the U.S. and abroad have expressed a desire for additional support. By acquiring Transtem’s products and expertise, we have the opportunity to take a leadership role in an emerging area of healthcare as well as bring innovative new capabilities to our large base of hospitals, academic research centers and specialty outpatient providers.”

The Transtem solution stands out because of its comprehensive ability to support the collection and processing needs of cell therapy labs and cord blood banks, as well as the clinical needs of transplant centers and research facilities. The product’s depth is attributed to the fact that the software was designed by active cell therapy professionals.

“We designed the Transtem solution because we couldn’t find a technology solution that addressed our needs in a meaningful way,” said Jonathan Wofford, president of Transtem. “We started with a vision that integrated donors, products and patients, and created a management solution that supported requirements specific to cellular therapy. This includes donor, collection and processing needs, as well as the patient, therapy and administrative management processes that are unique in cellular therapies.”

Mr. Wofford has more than nine years experience in the field of cellular therapies and has worked with prestigious organizations such as the St. Louis Cord Blood Bank at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. In 2005 he was recognized by the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) for outstanding clinical research related to the use of umbilical cord blood for adult transplant recipients and in 2008 spoke before members of Congress on the need for a national cord blood inventory and in support for the reauthorization of funding for the National Marrow Donor Program.

The Transtem solution has immediate appeal in the United States and will be quickly introduced to Mediware’s existing customers which include many of the largest and most prestigious medical centers. Further, the Transtem solution has applicability to international markets, especially in the U.K. where more than 50 percent of hospitals use Mediware’s JAC Medication Management technologies.
